Research in Environmental Health Science

This research website provides an overview of the EHS domains of expertise and enables you to access each individual project and faculty team website by area of expertise and keyword. The department is engaged in a wide range of research projects that can be grouped into four main areas of expertise, with strong inter-disciplinary interaction between these areas:

Interdisciplinary research is carried out developing a variety of complementary scientific methods and techniques ranging from: genomic and proteomic, molecular techniques, epidemiology, clinical studies, biomarkers, integrated sensors, environmental monitoring, mathematical modeling, pharmacokinetics, life cycle assessment and risk assessment.

We generate basic knowledge to study various environmental media, with emphasis on: air quality, indoor air quality, water quality and biofilms, looking at inhalation, oral, and dermal exposure.

We specificly look at impact of climate change on human health, interactions between ecosystems and health, gene-environment interactions.

We study mechanisms associated to pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, as well as to reproductive, developmental, and neurological toxicity.

We investigate microbial and toxicological risks for a wide variety of substances ranging from: metals (eg. lead, mercury, etc), airborn particulates, organic pollutants (eg. dioxins, furans, PCBs, PAHs, PBDEs, and other flame retardants).
